Reflection

Public speaking and communicating well have always been a skill that I would like to improve on. During presentation, I tend to get nervous and always forget what I rehearsed. The goal that I’ve set for myself for this module was to be able to speak confidently and deliver all my ideas clearly across to the audience during presentation. Through this module, I can speak more confidently in front of a large group of people however structuring my ideas in my head and delivering all of it during the presentation can still be further improved as I tend to miss out certain points. Additionally, I feel that this module had allow me to pick up many interpersonal skills through the group works and peer sharing activities we did in class. It was a good opportunity for us to talk to one another and understand the importance of working with different types of people.

The activity that resonate me the most was the first peer to peer mock presentation we had with group as it was our first time sharing and delivering our idea to our classmates. Through this activity, I can see that most of us felt more confident and were not shy to present in front of a small group of audience. We also managed to get a more honest and genuine feedback from other classmates to better improve ourselves.

For the presentation showcase, my team was fortunate to be given a chance to be one of the presenting team. One of the major improvements that I made was reducing the number of fillers that I used between sentences. Without the filler words, it helped me to be more confident and charismatic and was able to connect with the judges and audiences even better than before. One other specific improvement I made during this presentation was also maintaining good eye contact with everyone rather than looking on the screen or only three judges. My teammates and I worked hard together to put on a good show for everyone and fortunately emerged as first runner up for the showcase. Overall, I have learned many skills in this module on formal writing as well as public speaking. I believe that all these life skills will be beneficial for me in my future career.

  1. Hello Jun,

Thanks for the heartwarming reflection. I totally agreed with you on the presentation showcase, you and your team had great confidence and team chemistry. It was ashamed that your team did not manage to clinch the first place.

All in all, it was great working with you!

  2. Dear Jun,

Thank you for this detailed reflection. I appreciate that you had concerns for your comm skills at the term's start and that you now feel you improved on many of those. You mention the feedback, in partciular, especially that given in the mock presentation and how that feedback proved useful for you to improve in areas such as the use of fillers.

I'm also happy to learn that you valued participating (and winning!) in the presentation showcase. You and your team members did a very commendable job in terms of content and delivery, showing so much improvement over your presentation in class.

In general, you made a very good effort this term. All the best as you continue your learning journey!
